Abstract

1,149,702. Apparatus for shaping glass sheets. P.P.G. INDUSTRIES Inc. 4 Oct., 1967 [16 Nov., 1966], No. 45167/67. Heading C1M. An apparatus for shaping heat-softened glass sheets which comprises a glass shaping member, having a shaping surface which is rigid compared to a heat-softened sheet to be shaped and which is formed to the final shape desired for the glass sheet, and a cover of resin-impregnated fibre-glass fabric disposed between the shaping surface and the hot glass sheet is provided with a parting material of a lubricious organic material disposed between the shaping surface of the shaping member and the hot glass sheet contacting surface of the fabric cover. In the preferred embodiment the apparatus comprises a pair of complementary shaping members 10, 11 for press bending a sheet G of heat-softened glass interposed therebetween. The shaping surfaces 12, 14 of the two members are covered with a layer 22 of knit fibre-glass fabric. Provided on that face of the layer 22 facing the shaping surface 12 or 14 of each member 10, 11 is a coating 24 of a parting material. Suitable materials for the parting materials have been found to be various silicones and fluorocarbons, of which silicone rubber and polytetrafluoroethylene are specified. In various other embodiments the parting material may be applied additionally to the glass contacting surface of the cover 22; to the shaping surface of the shaping member. In an instance where the cover comprises two or more layers of fibre-glass fabric the parting material may be applied to the non-glass contacting surface of the outermost layer. The shaping surface may be a sag-bending mould. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 983,805.
