Abstract
1,270,757. Winches; lifting devices. FRIED. KRUPP G.m.b.H. 10 June, 1970 [11 June, 1969; 12 Nov., 1969; 19 March, 1970], No. 28190/70. Headings B8B and B8H. An apparatus for the transference of floatable containers between water subject to wave motion and a ship, comprises hoisting winches 7 on the ship for lifting and lowering via cables 9, a carrier frame 11 couplable to the top of a container, and a seaway following winch 8 associated with each winch 7 for constantly maintaining the cables taut. Each corner of the frame 11 incorporates one or two sheaves 10 around which one or a pair of cables 9 are looped between the ends thereof which are wound on a hoisting winch 7 and a seaway winch 8. The winch 7 carries out the normal lifting and lowering operations whereas the winch 8 is driven by a main motor 20 to wind up the cable 9 only when the container is lifted by a wave. The winch 8 is also acted upon by an auxiliary motor 26 through a threaded clutch/brake mechanism 22, 23, 24 which provided the motor 26 is braked at 27, and provided the cables 9 are loaded by the container, brakes the winch 8 in the unwinding direction. The clutch-brake mechanism is released upon the winch 8 being driven by the motor 20 to wind up the cable 9. If the brake 27 is released, the auxiliary motor 26 drives to cause release of the clutch-brake, whereby the cables 9 can pay out as the container moves into a wave trough. The container is guided and held in position for engagement with the carrier frame by longitudinal timbers and a transverse buoyant shell having electro-magnets for engagement with the container and supported from the ship by pivoted spring buffers and a hoist. Two of the hoist winches are driven from a common drive through differential gearing to effectively provide a three point suspension for the container. The container is locked at each corner to the frame 11 by bayonet pegs 12 which are rotatable for locking once a switch 15 on the frame is actuated through a lever 16 by the container. In the embodiment of Figs. 4, 5, 6 (not shown) a protrusion at each corner of the container is engageable in a housing in the frame and a ram operated key thereon engages an aperture in the protrusion. In a further embodiment Figs. 9, 10, 11 (not shown), a protrusion on the container is received in a housing at each corner of the frame and a pair of grippers lock the protrusions therein as a result of a ram actuated scissor action of the grippers.
