Abstract

1,270,738. Cutting tools. W. C. BLATCHFORD (Henry W. Stier). 19 Aug., 1970, No. 40032/70. Heading B3T. A cutting tool comprises a holder with a recess 2 at one end in which a cutting insert 6 is retained by a pin 15 which extends from a bore 10 in the bottom of the recess into an aperture 8 in the insert. The pin 15 is engaged coaxially with a lower part 11 engaging in the bore 10 in the holder and is biased upwardly by a spring 18 and having a transverse wedging surface 23. A wedging member 24 is provided in the form of a bent wire having a coiled head 25 and a cranked tail portion 26 which is located in a bore 27 in the part 11, the head 25 engaging the wedging surface 23 of the pin 15 and the inner surfaces of the aperture in the insert which urges the insert into clamping engagement with the shoulder 4 of the recess 2, under the biasing pressure of the spring 18. An insert seating plate 7 may be provided which is retained in the recess by the lower part 11 and which is provided with a conical surface 12 which engages a corresponding surface of the seating plate. The insert is released from the holder by depressing the pin 15 against the spring to free the wedging member.
