Abstract

1,270,019. Reciprocating compressors. J. E. GRIMMER. July 5, 1969, No.34008/69. Heading F1N. A multi-cylinder air compressor is provided with a cylinder head 20 constituting a receiving chamber 45 for air compressed in the cylinders, the outlet ports 65 from each cylinder compression chamber 49 being arranged to discharge into the receiving chamber 45 at regions of lowpressure so as to enhance each cylinder's exhaustion. The low-pressure regions are created by Venturi-like constrictions 51 in the chamber 45 through which air discharged from the cylinders has to flow during its passage to a compressed air outlet 19. An annular valve assembly 63 shown diagrammatically in Fig. 3 controls the entry and exit of air to and from its cylinder 43. Each valve assembly 63 comprises a central valve controlled inlet port 64 and a pair of valve controlled outlet ports 65. The inlet valve is held open continuously by an unloader 67 when the pressure in a reservoir fed by the compressor reaches a predetermined value. The compressor is driven by an I.C. engine having pistons driving the compressor's crank-shaft, Fig. 1 (not shown), the engine-compressor being mounted on a wheeled vehicle having means for coupling the engine to propel the vehicle. The engine-compressor is cooled by liquid pumped through passages 42, 58.
