Abstract

1,269,833. Crystallising. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. 30 June, 1970 [11 July, 1969], No. 35121/ 69. Heading B1S. [Also in Divisions B3 and F4] Articles are directionally solidified by effecting relative movement between an article-containing mould and a furnace having a heatfront therein. A mould 17 for a turbine blade is placed on a water-cooled chill plate 16 on a continuously or indexably rotating table 12. A furnace 13 extends about part of the circumference of the table 12 and includes a mould preheating zone A, a pouring station B and a solidification zone C. Heating elements 15 extends along the sidewalls 14a, 14b (and, if desired, the roof) of the furnace. The length of the elements 15 in the solidification zone increases from the pouring station B through the zone C in the clockwise direction P. In operation the table 12 rotates clockwise sequentially preheating the moulds 17, filling them with a molten charge at B and cooling the charge from its base upwards as the moulds pass through the zone C having a heat-front at an oblique angle to the table 12, the angle being determined by the diminishing length of elements 15 in the clockwise direction. As an alternative, a particulate or rough cast article can be placed in a mould and melted as it passes through the furnace. Vacuum or inert atmospheres can be provided within the furnace and multicavitied moulds may be employed.
