Abstract

1,262,846. Thermal switches; arc extinguishing. VAPOR CORP. 28 Aug., 1970 [9 Feb., 1970], No. 41498/70. Heading H1N. A high voltage thermal switch comprises an insulating base 17 formed with an arc-chute 19 and magnetic arc blowout 40. The base carries terminals 13, 14 between which is fitted a fusible link. The walls of the arc-chute 19 are hollow and contain permanent magnets 40 whose field extends across the arc-chute. The fusible link comprises a ceramic base 23; terminal straps 24, 25 riveted to the base 23; and a spring strip 26, fixed by one rivet 33 and held in engagement with the other by a mass 34 which fuses at a predetermined high temperature. The upper surface of base 23 is arched and the spring strip is deformed over this so that it springs up to introduce a large gap when the mass 34 fuses. The spring strip 26 is a copper-spring steel bimetal so as to have low resistance.
