[Also in Division G4] An electromagnetic pulse counter is in the form of a switch with its coil 24 on a core 17 and surrounded by a magnetic shell 21 with radially extending armatures 1-12, movable from a rest position in engagement with a secondary pole 20 to an intermediate position when the previous armature is moved to its attracted position in engagement with a main pole 18. When the coil is pulsed the armature in its intermediate position is attracted to the main pole and moves the next armature to its intermediate position whilst closing a contact set, as at 14, and opening the set of contacts, as at 13, which were closed when the previous armature was attracted to the main pole 18. The armatures remain in the attracted position due to remanance and are released when a throw-off winding (not shown) is energized. Reed type armatures may be provided and extend radially inward or outwards (Figs. 3, 4, 6, 7, not shown). The springs (not shown) which control the relative movement of the armatures may be as described in Specification 788,821. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 8) the armatures (not shown) carry permanent magnets such as 43 arranged to move to a position where they oppose the effect of the previously moved magnet 42 on one contact set 38 and operate the next contact set 39. Flux diverting members surround the magnets 44, 45 of the inoperative armatures. Fixed permanent magnets may be used with magnetic shields on the armatures. Contacts may be operated on each stage of armature movement, and an additional armature may respond to each pulse. The throw-off winding may be mounted on the shell.
