Abstract

1,161,401. Electromagnetic switches; vacuum switches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 15 Sept., 1966 [16 June, 1965], No. 25493/65. Heading H1N. A vacuum switch 13 is operated by an electromagnetic operating device 24 such as that shown in Specification 884,726 (Division XXXV), and is provided with an electromagnetic coupling between the switch and operating device enabling the switch to be opened while the operating device is in the closed position. The operating device is bi-stable, one or other of a pair of rectilinearly movable armatures 22, 23 being attracted to a permanent magnet assembly 21, and is changed over to its other state by energizing flux diverting coils for a short while. Upon a power failure, which would render the device 24 inoperative, a coil 29, wound on a core 26 attached to the vacuum switch envelope 13, is de-energized and releases an armature 25 attached to the housing of the operating device 24, allowing the casings to separate under gravity and open the contacts. The assembly can be reset when power is restored by changing over the device 24 so that the casing thereof is drawn upwards (Fig. 4, not shown) to a position where it can be reattracted by coil 29. In a modification (Fig. 7, not shown), the armature (125) and coil (129) are attached respectively to the moving contact (114) and operating shaft (114A) instead of between the casings 13, 24. The operating device may be a simple solenoid type.
