Abstract

A bottom pour slab-casting mould has two side blocks 12 which can be moved towards and away from each other, and a plurality of inner blocks 14, 16, 18, 20, defining with the side blocks, a mould cavity 12, a runner 25 and a riser 22. The top inner block 14 and its riserdefining extension 15 are so mounted that they may be moved vertically and longitudinally of the side blocks to free a slab cast in the mould. Two platforms 28, 30 (Fig. 2) are attached to one of the side walls 12 and have mounted upon them a platform 32 which accommodates two vertically acting jacks 38 powered by a motor 44 through gearing 34, 36, 40, 42, 46. The jacks, operating in a 1 to 1 ratio, raise and lower the block 14 via links 48, adjustable blocks 68 and a mould block support 49. Each link 48 has two parts 52, 70 connected by a toggle linkage (not shown), both of these parts being pivoted to the blocks 68 but only parts 52 being pivoted to the jacks 38. As the jacks are raised, the wheels 80 mounted on the parts 70 engage the undersides 124 of the platform 32 and force the mould block support 49 to the right, this in turn freeing the riser extension 15 from the cast riser in the mould. The links 48 are sprung so that on lowering of the jacks 38 the links and mould parts return to their original positions.
