Abstract

1,151,401. Casting apparatus. UNITED ENG. & FOUNDRY CO. 17 May, 1967 [13 June, 1966], No. 22982/67. Heading B3F. Casting apparatus for use in bottom pouring pressure casting comprises a pair of carriages 10, 11, each supporting a mould part 18, 25 respectively, mechanical means in the form of worm and wheel units 33, 34 with spindle drives 36, 37, being provided for moving at least one of the carriages in a horizontal direction towards and away from the other to form a casting cavity and permit the removal of the casting respectively. Each carriage is provided with two groups of independent, yieldable non-fluid support means such as springs 23, 26 and 24, 27 at the upper and lower regions of the mould sides respectively, acting in a horizontal direction, the lower groups 24, 27 having a higher load carrying capacity than the upper groups to compensate for the higher pressure created in the lower portion of the mould during the casting operation. Top 31, bottom 32 and end members are positioned between the side portions 18 and 25 prior to the closure of the sides, the top member 31 being supported from the carriage 10 and the bottom part 32 being independent of both carriages. The mould side members 18, 25 are constituted by a plurality of abutting blocks secured by bolts 43.
