A device for feeding a ribbon 56 of labels 54 delimited by registration marks in the form of partial cuts 70 and obtaining register for accurately cutting the ribbon along the registration marks comprises a pair of jaws 38, 82 which close to deform the ribbon laterally so that an uncut label 54 assumes a bowed shape with a raised portion 92 at the cut 70. The jaws 38, 82 reciprocate to feed the ribbon forward until the bowed portion 92 abuts the raised edge 159 of a knife blade 156; further forward movement of the jaws 38, 82 causes the ribbon 56 to buckle as at 181 so that the portion 92 is positively located against the blade 156 which is then actuated to cut the ribbon. Thus, each label 54 is severed from the ribbon exactly at the registration mark resulting in the production of accurately cut labels free from such marks. The registration may be effected by the opposite of buckling as in another embodiment in which the ribbon is held taut between a reciprocating cutter and a brake (Figs. 18 to 22, not shown). Thus, the ribbon is coerced by holding means and ribbon engaging means to deform or stress it between said means thereby to obtain register with the cutter. The engaging means may be the jaws 38, 82 as shown in Figs. 1 to 16, or may be partly in the cutting means (259) and in the jaws (240), Fig. 18 (not shown), in the cutting means (459), Fig. 28 (not shown), or a tension plate (660), Fig. 43 (not shown). The holding means may be the knife edge 159, brake elements (220, 320, 421 or 506), Figs. 18, 20, 28, 35 (not shown), or a fixed holding means (620), Fig. 43, not shown. The registration marks may be in the form of perforations rather than cuts.
