A suction head for lifting articles 21 which is suspended from a device 16 in its cap 17, comprises cylindrical portions la, 1b within which piston rods 7 and a piston 5 are reciprocable, and a cylindrical head 3 connected to the portion 1b to which an annular seal 10 is attached which contacts the article 21. When the piston 5 is raised as shown in the right-hand side of Fig. 1, the pressure in the cylinder la, 1b and the region enclosed by the seal 10 is reduced thus forming a seal with the article 21 and a vacuum pump 12 which is in communication with the suction chamber 14 beneath the piston 5 maintains the reduction in pressure in the space enclosed by the seal 10 when the piston 5 is returned to the position shown in the left-hand side of Fig. 1. A locking device 11 serves to selectively detach the cap 17 from the cylinder la, 1b to permit movement of the piston 5 relative to the cylinder. The seal 10 may be attached to a swing plate (4), Figs. 2, 4 (not shown), which is pivotally attached to cylindrical head 3. In further embodiments ventilation holes (1e), Fig. 3 (not shown) may be provided in the upper cylindrical portion la, and the vacuum pump may be mounted on the exterior of cylindrical portion 1b, Fig. 6 (not shown).
