Abstract

1,258,811. Vacuum switches. INSTITUT PRUFFELD FUR ELEKTRISCHE HOCHLEISTUNGSTECHNIK. 2 Jan., 1969, No. 322/69. Heading H1N. The arc extinction chamber of a vacuum switch comprises a metal and insulating housing, at least the insulating parts of the housing being of multi-walled construction, the cavities 9 between the walls being filled with a gas at a pressure between that in the chamber and atmospheric. The switch shown comprises inner and outer insulating cylinders 1b, la sealed together at their ends and sealed to metal end plates 3, 4. Fixed contact 5 is carried by end plate 3 and moving contact 6 by a metal bellows 7 secured to plate 4. A metal shield 8 surrounding the contacts screens the insulating cylinder 1b from metal vapour. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the inner insulating cylinder is sealed to the outer insulating cylinder by metal connectors. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the inner cylinder is made from two insulating annuli joined by a metal annulus, the inner cylinder being secured to the outer cylinder by metal connectors. In Fig. 4 (not shown), two double-walled insulating annuli are joined to a single walled metal annulus provided internally with screening projections. The cavity or cavities 9 may be filled with air SF 6 or inert gas. The insulating parts of the casing may be of ordinary glass or ceramics instead of the conventional gas impermeable glass or ceramics. Cooling passages may be provided in the cavities 9. Resistors, capacitors and rectifiers may be provided in the cavities.
