Abstract

A high voltage capacitor (2) is mounted between two conductive side flanges (4, 6). An air-tight tube (9) of insulating material is also fixed between side flanges. Inside the tube are two contacts (14, 16). One is fixed to a side flange via a graphite block (20) and the other, a mobile contact, is attached to the other side flange by an expanding sleeve of elastic material. The sleeve, whose interior is at atmospheric pressure (26), keeps the contact together thus forming a short-circuit across the capacitor. When the tube is pressurised, the contacts separate. This contact arrangement provides safety when working on the capacitor.
