[Also in Division E2] An hydraulic clamping device e.g. for clamping a gear-cutting tool 34 to a machine shaft 13, comprises a core 14 and surrounding cap-like member 24 between which is a chamber 22 which communicates with a chamber 15 in the core 14, the chamber 15 incorporating a piston 17 whose movement is transmitted by hydraulic fluid in the chambers to cap-like member 24 to cause the latter to move axially of the core. In one form (as shown), the core has a threaded spigot 11 which passes through a central aperture of tool 34 into a socket 12 in the shaft. Lip seals 30 enclose chamber 22, although that lip seal nearest the tool could be replaced by an 0-ring seal acting between facing surfaces of flange 26 and core 14, thus allowing the chamber 22 to widen or flare outwardly towards flange 26. Axial movement of the cap-like member relative to the core is limited by screw 31. In another form (Fig. 3, not shown), the core includes the threaded socket for receiving a spigot of the shaft, and relative axial movement of the core and cap-like member is limited by a locking ring (131).
