Abstract

1,255,921. Breech mechanisms. DEFENCE, SECRETARY OF STATE FOR. 9 May, 1966 [7 May, 1965; 1 Nov., 1965], Nos. 19477/65 and 46217/65. Heading F3C. A mechanism for opening the breech block 2 upon recoil of the gun 1 comprises a breech ring 4 in which the breech block is horizontally slidable in a recess 3, the breech block being connected by a pivot pin 11 to a rocker member 8 rolling on a cylindrical track 7 formed on the ring. The curved surface 9 of the member 8 has a radius equal to half that of the track 7 so that on recoil of the gun causing lugs 10b of the member 8 to strike the end of a stop member 12, the surface 9 rolls on the track 7 and the pivot pin 11 moves in a straight line to open the breech block 2 (Fig. 2, not shown). A spring- loaded catch (14) (Figs. 7-9, not shown) retains the breech block open until the insertion of a new projectile 15. The breech block is closed by springs 28 which are compressed on recoil of the gun and which act on a slide 25 connected by a pivot 27 to the rocker member 8 so that the latter rolls in the reverse direction on the track 7.
