Abstract

A device for handling ingots comprises dog arms 10, 11 pivoted at 15 and whose upper lever portions 17, 16 are pivoted by levers 50 to a clevis plate 60, the arms 10, 11 being maintained in an open position prior to gripping an ingot by means of a tumbler hook 67 pivotally mounted at a pin 66 on the plate 60 and whose bight 71 engages the pivot 15. To lift an ingot the device is lowered e.g. by means of a hook engaged in a slot 64 in the plate 60 and the dog arms 10, 11 abut the upper surface of the ingot thus permitting the plate 60 to be lowered towards pivot 15 and a cam surface 68 of hook 67 abuts the sleeve (31), Fig. 3 (not shown), of pivot 15 causing hook 67 to disengage the pivot 15. Continued downward movement of plate 60 results in its lower part 65 abutting a guide member 80 causing progressive rotation of hook 67 about pin 66 until it comes to rest against a stop member 81 as shown in Fig. 6 (not shown). On raising the plate 60 the dog arms 10, 11 are drawn inwardly by means of the link arms 50 and dog bits 23 grip the ingot, the hook 67 being drawn away from the stop member 81 such that its cam surface 69 is adjacent the upper side of the pivot 15. To release the ingot the device is lowered until the ingot is resting in position and continued lowering results in cam surface 69 bearing against pivot 15 to tilt the hook 67 rearwardly until its barb clears pivot 15 and presents the bight 71 to the pivot 15 whence upward movement of plate 60 results in the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 such that the arms 10, 11 are in the open position and the device can be lifted clear for use with another ingot.
