[Class 78 (iv)] [See also Group XXI] In an elevator or tube gripping appliance for use in well drilling &c. operations and having slips for gripping the tube &c., a pivotally supported gate is held closed by a latch adapted to pass over the free end of the gate, and means are provided for varying the relation between the co-operating faces of the gate and latch without releasing the latch. A body 1, with bail &c. receiving ears 2, has a gate 5 pivoted at 4 and, when closed, resting on a lug 9 on the body. A latch yoke 6, supported on ball bearings 45, is hinged by a welded pin 7 to the body to pass over the tree end of the gate and has a latch pin 42, controlled by a spring- pressed arm 43, engaging a recess in a member 19 on the gate to lock the latter. The member 19 is pivoted at 20 to the gate and is adjustably held by a screw 28 and nut 30 whereby when the slips 11 fail to release the pipe &c., a slight outward movement of the yoke 6 and gate 5 may be permitted ; co-operating bosses 32, 33, on the member 19 and gate 5 respectively, are filed away to permit take-up of wear. The body and gate have stepped tapered surfaces engaging the slips 11 which are mounted on spring-pressed pins 12. The slips may have arcuate recesses 15, Fig. 4, receiving rubber &c. cushions 16 and bumper elements 14 held by welded plates 17, the elements 14 co-operating with tubing &c., collars to move the slips into gripping position ; lugs 18 engage recesses in adjacent slips to ensure simultaneous movement of the slips. To retain the lifting bails &c., in the ears 2, the latter have bifurcated downward extensions 47 with pivot pins 50 engaging slots 54 in hook members 49 with recesses engaging cross bars 53, the hook members being lifted to permit release of the bails &c. The hook members may be locked by pins 55. Tilting of the elevator on the bails when the gate is open is prevented by cams 60 adjustably held to the body by screws 61. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the transversely-movable slip-setting plungers now forming the subject matter of Specification 424,557. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
