Abstract
1,251,295. Hydraulic turbines. SOC. GRENOBLOISE D' ETUDES ET D'APPLICATIONS HYDRAULIQUES. Feb.26, 1969 [Feb.26, 1968; Dec.26, 1968], No. 10376/69. Heading F1T. The invention relates to an apparatus for driving a rotating tool and is designed for use under water, the apparatus comprising a wheel formed with a series of nozzles which are directed tangentially so that water under pressure supplied to the wheel discharges therefrom as a series of tangentially directed jets whereby the wheel is driven. In Fig. 1 the apparatus comprises a wheel 18 rotatably mounted on a tubular member 16, the wheel being drivingly connected to a tool-holder 21. A pump 11 takes its suction through line 12 and delivers water under pressure through line 14 to the tubular member 16, flow being controlled by valve 14a. The wheel comprises a hollow centre portion 18 and four radial arms 22 which terminate in tangentially-directed nozzles 19. The wheel comprises also upper and lower walls 23 and guide walls 24. Water discharging through the nozzles 19 in the form of jets 20 drives the wheel and the tool-holder 21. In Fig. 6 (not shown) the wheel comprises eight radially-extending arms (27) and nozzles (19a), the nozzles being elongated parallel to the rotational axis. In Fig. 7 (not shown) the arms are disposed in three axially spaced planes 28, 28', 28" each arm terminating in a nozzle 19b. The arms may be inclined upwardly so that axial thrust is imparted to the tool-holder. In Fig. 10 (not shown), a trough member is disposed below the wheel so that the discharging jets are directed upwardly. Further embodiments are described.
