A gramophone for stationary records comprises a housing 6 which can be centred relative to the record 8 and an intermediate disc-shaped element 3, mounted on a shaft 10 driven by a motor 4, on which a radially movable transducer head 2 is mounted. Signals from the head 2 are reproduced by a speaker unit 5 mounted on a rotating member 13 or the speaker unit can be fixed and connected to the pick-up head via slip rings. The housing may be supported on three legs 14 which can engage recesses 15 in the record for registering the housing therewith or the housing may be provided, Fig. 7 (not shown), with transparent registration extensions carrying marks which register with marks on the record. Alternatively the lower portion of the housing may be provided with a cover 36 which engages against shoulders 37 on the housing and carries a centring peg 38 for centring a record 8 within the cover relative to the housing. A number of methods of driving the intermediate element 3 from the motor 4 are described including two, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), in which the motor is tiltable to drive the element backwards or forwards. A brush arrangement 50, Fig. 10, is provided which acts to clean the record grooves when the pick-up stylus 11 is moved in the normal direction but which pivots to lift the stylus from the grooves when moved in the opposite direction. Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown) show an arrangement for returning the transducer head to its start position on operation of a return lever. In a further arrangement, e.g. for teaching purposes, the record is formed with alternate stylus groove and magnetic track, the student listening to matter permanently recorded in the stylus track and recording on the magnetic track.
