A reciprocating internal-combustion engine having a water jacket surrounding the combustion chamber or chambers thereof has a metering pump arranged for injecting water from the jacket into the or each combustion chamber after firing of the fuel therein and during the working stroke, the metering pump and the fuel supply means being coupled so that the injected water and supplied fuel are maintained in constant proportions during operation. The exact instant of water injection during the working stroke may vary according to the load on the engine.
