Abstract

1,248,729. Latches. ATWOOD VACUUM MACHINE CO. 9 July, 1970 [11 July, 1969], No. 33283/70. Heading E2A. A latch, e.g. a motor-car bonnet latch, for securing together two relatively movable parts comprises a housing 14 for mounting on one part and formed with an opening 20 to receive a striker 10 adapted to be carried by the other part, latching means pivotally mounted on the housing and operable to secure the striker in the opening, and a release lever 40 which is pivotally mounted on the housing and is operable to release the latching means and at the same time to move at least partially across the opening 20 in the housing, there being a cam surface 54 on the lever which lies in the path of the striker when the lever is at least partially across the opening. As shown, the latch assembly comprises a catch 24 having a ratchet 26 and an opening 28 which provides a positive lock for holding the striker in the housing; a pawl 32 cooperates with the ratchet and is urged into locking relationship therewith by a spring 36, and the release lever has cam surfaces 52, 54. In operation, by pulling on the wire 46 the lever 40 and pawl 32 are pivoted in a counterclockwise direction to move the projection 34 from the ratchet 26 and allow the catch to pivot in a counter-clockwise direction whereby the striker is released, the spring 44 returning the lever 40 to the initial position thereof. Where breakage of the wire 46 or rust or dirt inhibit movement of the lever back to the full-line position as shown in the figure, upon release of the catch, upward movement of the striker against the cam surface 54 causes the lever to pivot to the full-line position; similarly, on downward movement of the striker the latter engages the cam surface 52 to move the lever to the full-line position. Figs. 5, 6 and 7 (not shown) illustrate modifications of the ratchet and pawl mechanism.
