A vehicle door fastening device comprises a "child safety" mechanism which, when the device is fitted is operable from inside the door when the door is closed to render an internal releasing mechanism of the device inoperative and a safety member by which the safety mechanism is cancelled which is inaccessible from inside the vehicle when the door is closed. As shown, in which the device is of the "zero torque" type. comprising a rotary stepped cam 4 and a cam plate 6 journalled in a plastics moulding 3, an external releasing mechanism comprises a slide 12 having a peg 13, for connection to an outside pushbutton, and a projection 14 for engagement with an arm 15 of the cam plate. An internal release mechanism comprises a lever 16 connected to remote control linkage 20. A safety lever 22 is connected to a locking linkage 24 of a remote sill control member 25 having a neutral position 26 from which it is movable against a spring 34 to a child safety position 26a and to a locking position 26b. An L-shaped slide 35 mounted on the moulding 3 includes a peg 36 engaging an indexing spring 37. and a peg 39 which engages a slot 40 on the lever 22. The arrangement is such that movement of member 25 to position 26b acts through link 32 to displace the slide 35 downwardly so that a flange 42 thereon engages a slot 43 in the slide 12 to block movement thereof by the external releasing means. Alternatively, movement of member 25' to position 26a turns lever 22 so that arm 52 thereof blocks an arm 53 of lever 16 and moves slide 35 upwardly to a position in which the head 48 of a spring-loaded push button 44 projecting from the closing edge of the door, is aligned with and enters a lower enlarged width portion of a slot 46 on the slide 35 to prevent return movement of the slide 35, lever 22 and linkage 24, to the neutral position until such time as the door is opened to permit thie push button to be depressed and the parts returned to the neutral position under the action of spring 34. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), a flange 54 on lever 22 is replaced by a peg for co-operation with a modified surface of lever 16.
