Abstract

1,247,995. Multi-spindle lathes. WICKMAN MACHINE TOOL SALES Ltd. 29 July, 1970 [5 Aug., 1969], No. 39055/69. Heading B3T. A multi-spindle automatic lathe comprises a housing 11 in which is located an indexable spindle drum 12 which carries a plurality of rotatable work spindles 9, driven from a driving shaft 10 by way of gearing. The gearing includes a layshaft 4, and clutches 5 and 6 are provided for each work spindle to selectively permit drive to a spindle by way of gears 1 and 2 when clutch 5 is engaged or drive to the spindle via the layshaft and gears 1, 2, 3, 7 and 8 when the clutch 6 is engaged. The clutches are selectively operated in accordance with the operational requirements of the lathe. As a result of the arrangement described each work spindle 9 can be driven at two alternative speeds in the same direction of rotation. One layshaft is provided for each pair of work spindles. An even number of work spindles are provided.
