Abstract

918,231. Automatic lathes. WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK GILDEMEISTER & CO. A.G. Oct. 10, 1961 [Oct. 10, 1960], No. 36387/61. Class 83 (3). An automatic multi-spindle lathe has camshafts for the feed movement of cross-slides and a longitudinal slide driven through " infinitely-variable " means, the feed drives being arranged to be connected through individual electromagnetic clutches. The machine comprises six work spindles 15, Fig. 4, mounted in an indexible turret 66. The latter is extended in the form of a cage with bars 66<SP>1</SP> and an outboard support ring 6611. The turret is indexed by Geneva mechanism driven from one of the main cam-shafts (35), see below, and a toothed ring 70. The bed 1 is constructed to receive coolant and a transparent splash guard 5 is fitted over the working space. Driving and feed mechanism. The work spindles are driven from a central shaft 12 rotated by a motor 8, belts 9, Fig. 7, and gears 10, II. The spindle end of the shaft 12 carries two pinions 13, 13<SP>1</SP>, each of which drives three spindles. A combined electromagnetic clutch and brake 15<SP>1</SP>, 15<SP>11</SP> is provided for each spindle. Two pinions 17, 17<SP>1</SP> are provided at the drive end of shaft 12 to rotate, in synchronism with the spindles, auxiliary shafts 16 which may drive work-feeding, screw-cutting or like devices. Faced surfaces are provided on the machine at 19-23, Fig. 3, for securing such devices in working position. A known type of " infinitely-variable " drive 31, Fig. 7b, with a motor 31<SP>1</SP> is provided for driving, through a pinion 32, Fig. 4, and ring gear 33, surrounding the spindle drum, the three main cam-shafts 34, 35 and 36. The latter controls the movements of top tool-slides 26, 27, Fig. 3, and the other cam-shafts control the two lower tool-slides. The middle tool-slides are fed by cams driven directly through gearing from the ring 33. Cam-shaft 36 also drives gearing 45-47 for a screw 48, Fig. 4, which feeds the longitudinal slide 30. All the cam-shaft drives are provided with double electromagnetic clutches which engage either the feed drive (above) or the highspeed drive (below). A further infinitely variable drive is provided for the high-speed drive rotating ring gear 52 arranged adjacent to the ring gear 33. The clutches are controlled from a switch-board incorporating a plug panel on which a predetermined programme can be arranged.
