A ventilated shoe has a channel or duct situated between the outersole and insole, air holes b in the insole a which communicate with the duct and an outlet d at the heel end of the shoe. A gauze mesh c above the duct prevents the entry of fluff from socks. A valve e, consisting of a ball, e.g. of cork or plastics material, in a well prevents the entry of water into the shoe. If water should enter through outlet d into the well the ball rises to block the duct. The water is ejected by the action of walking when air is expelled through the outlet d.
