Abstract

1,211,919. Boots &c. G. B. BRITTON & SONS Ltd. 29 May, 1969 [20 July, 1968; 19 Oct., 1968], Nos. 34733/68.and 49722/68. Heading A3B. An article of footwear having a moulded sole 10 includes a resilient cellular cushioning element 16, 17 positioned above the sole 10, or in a depression therein, at least the lower surface of the cellular element 16, 17 being impervious to prevent or reduce impregnation by the material of the sole 10. The element may be formed of two parts 16, 17, the lower part 17 being of closed cell construction and the upper part being of open cell construction. The insole may be provided with holes 14 so that the shoe can be ventilated by the pumping action of the resilient cellular layers 16, 17. In a modification (not shown) the upper surface of the cellular element is formed with grooves separated by ridges to increase the ventilating effect. Suitable materials for the sole 10 are rubber, p.v.c. and polyurethane and suitable materials for the cellular insert are rubber and p.v.c. Preferably the cellular insert is formed from a material different to that of the sole.
