Abstract

1,243,278. Magnetic bulk erasers. SONY CORP. 16 Oct., 1969 [16 Oct., 1968], No. 50838/69. Heading G5R. A bulk eraser for a reel of magnetic recording medium includes a housing 1 having a passage 2 through which, the reel is passed, and permanent magnets 7, 8 adjacent the passage for producing a magnetic field C oblique to the direction A of movement of the reel. through the passage. Each side of the passage has two: permanent magnets 7, 8 with faces of opposite polarity, or three or more magnets of alternating polarity may be located on one or both sides of the passage. A case for a reel, or a cassette 35, is placed on a guide 12 formed inside the entrance door 10 and if frangible members 40a, indicating that erasure is permissible, are present, lugs 21 are deflected D to release tabs 24, 25 thereby allowing a slide 45 to lower a stop 27 and permit the case or cassette to be inserted. The cassette is withdrawn at the other end of the passage through magnetic doors normally held closed by the magnets to prevent insertion from that end. The reel is then turned over and re-inserted to effect complete erasure, a keeper (Fig. 10, not shown) being attached to the cassette to prevent rotation of the reels.
