Abstract

1,241,322. Mountings of electrodes. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd., and KAYSER ELLISON & CO. Ltd. 3 Feb., 1969 [1 Feb., 1968], No. 5308/68. Heading H5H. A mounting for an electrode 9 used in arc furnaces or in electroslag remelting incorporates a ball joint permitting lateral angular movement of the electrode in any direction together with means for locking the ball joint in any position to which the electrode can be so moved, e.g. four locking screws 5 extending into the ball-joint housing 1 through tapped holes being used to engage a portion of the member 4 which has a part-spherical surface co-operating with a supporting hemispherical seating 3 to form the ball joint. A further portion of member 4 is secured to an intermediate member 6 attached by a bolted or clamped joint 7 to a demountable end member 8 to which the electrode 9 is attached by welding or by casting around a grooved end as shown. Copper braid or other flexible conductors 10 are connected from the housing 1 to the intermediate member 6 or to member 8 if the intermediate member 6 is omitted, the conductors offering a preferential current path round the ball joint. An electrode supporting clamp (not shown) engages spigot 2 which is centrally or eccentrically located on plate 11.
