Abstract
1,239,224. Dicarboxylic acids. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 4 Dec., 1968 [22 Dec., 1967], No. 58293/67. Addition to 1,115,921. Heading C2C. Dicarboxylic acids are prepared by oxidizing an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic saturated hydrocarbon with a gas mixture of oxygen and ozone at an elevated temperature in the presence of a compound of a transition metal such as titanium, vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt and nickel. The dicarboxylic acid is extracted into an aqueous phase, and the process may be continuous and cyclic at a pressure to keep the hydrocarbon in a liquid phase. In an example, cyclohexane is oxidized using a cobalt naphthenate catalyst, to a mixture from which adipic acid is separated.
