Abstract

1,143,213. Carboxylic acids. ETHYL CORP. 25 March. 1966 [25 March, 1965; 22 Oct., 19651, No. 13343/66. Heading C2C. Aromatic or aliphatic carboxylic acids are prepared by oxidizing a hydrocarbon with gaseous oxygen in the presence of a mixture of acetic and propionic acids, which forms a single phase liquid system with the hydrocarbon. Oxygen containing gases such as air may be used with a catalyst such as manganese stearate or tert.-butyl hydroperoxide. Straight chain hydrocarbons or cyclic hydrocarbons, e.g. hexadecane, octadecane and cyclohexane. Examples describe the preparation and purification of acids from hexadecane, octadecane, and cyclohexane. Adipic acid is the product of the process using the latter hydrocarbon. An aftertreatment by hydrogenation is also described.
