Abstract
1,237,628. Anti-soiling synthetic textile fibres. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. 26 March, 1969 [12 June, 1968], No. 15950/69. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C3] A synthetic textile fibre has incorporated therein at least 1% (based on the weight of the fibre) of a colloidal particulate silica or metal oxide in the form of elongated aggregations having a length-to-width ratio of at least 10 to 1. The fibre may have a crimp imparted to it by heat relaxation. The colloidal particles may be pyrogenic silica or metal oxide particles having chain-forming surface reactive groups such as hydroxyl groups. The particles may be silica particles having an average diameter of from 70 to 140 Angstroms and a surface area of from 200 to 400 square metres per gram. The proportion of such particles in the fibre may be from 1À5 to 5% by weight. The fibre may comprise an acrylonitrile polymer. The fibre may be formed by wet spinning a spinning solution in which the colloidal particles are dispersed. The wet gel fibre thereby formed may be washed, stretched and then heat relaxed, whereby there is obtained an uncrimped fibre. Alternatively, the wet gel fibre may be washed, stretched and dried and thereafter the dried fibre may be heat relaxed, whereby there is obtained a crimped fibre. The spinning solution may comprise an acrylonitrile polymer dissolved in an aqueous saline solvent. The fibres of the invention have a translucent lustre and improved apparent anti-soiling properties. Silica or metal oxide particles which may be used are those generated by vapour phase reaction carried out by flame hydrolysis. The thus generated metal oxides include Al 2 O 3 , Fe 2 O 3 and TiO 2 . The silicas used in the example are those marketed under the Trade Marks "Cab-O-Sil" and "Aerosil".
