A portable automatic screwdriver 1, Fig. 1, comprises a pneumatic motor 2, and a head 4, the latter including a spindle 13, Fig. 3, journalled in a fixed rear section 6, and a front section 7, slidable over the spindle, having a tube 22 through which screws are supplied. A screw 17 on section 7 projects into a longitudinal slot 18 in the fixed section 6 so as to prevent section 7 from becoming disconnected from section 6. Compressed air is supplied to a chamber 16 so as to extend section 7 and allow a screw to pass from tube 22, where it is gripped by fingers 33. Section 7 is retracted so as to engage the head 37 of the screw by the screwdriver spindle 13, by a spring 19, after air is exhausted from chamber 16. In a modification, retraction spring (42) Fig. 9 (not shown) is contained in chamber 16. In a further modification, Fig. 10 (not shown), retraction of section 7, as well as forward movement, is by pneumatic pressure; a pneumatic signal is provided to indicate the absence of screws from the head 4 and to recycle the screw feeding operation. Tube 22 is held in a bracket 23, Figs. 3, 7, by a latch 24 adapted to pivot inwardly through a slot 39 in the tube, when the tube is removed from bracket 23, so as to prevent screws from being shot out from the end of the tube.
