[Also in Divisions Fl and F4] Contaminants are separated from liquid fuel in a centrifugal separator 7 having a tangential inlet 11 and a further tangential inlet 73 which comes into use only at high rates of flow, a valve 74 upstream of its opening when the pressure across the valve rises to a value indicative of a high rate of flow. Finer contaminants tending to accumulate on a filter 15 at the outlets 18 for clean fuel are removed by a small return flow through a tangential auxiliary outlet leading via a check valve 67 and a flow restrictor 68 to the inlet of the fuel pump 6. Contaminated fuel leaving the separator via a tangential outlet 37 passes through a trap 42 which removes large contaminants.
