Abstract

1,231,767. Feeding webs. FUJI PHOTO FILM CO. Ltd. 23 Feb., 1970 [26 Feb., 1969], No. 8597/70. Heading B8R. In apparatus for butt-splicing the trailing end of an expiring web 2 to the leading end of a new web 3, a portion of splicing tape 22 is held, e.g. by suction, on the surface of a first roller 9 whilst the end of the web 3 is held in readiness, again by suction, against the surface of a second roller 7 which carries a knife 11 and which is mounted for co-operation with a third roller 8, the three rollers being in the position shown during the normal running of the web 2. However, when a detector senses the trailing end of the web 2, the rollers 7, 8 and 9 are rotated in timed relation in the direction of the arrows shown so as to advance cut ends of the two overlapped webs severed beetween rollers 7 and 8 into a position between rollers 8 and 9, whilst maintaining the cut ends in abutting relationship and simultaneously to bring the splicing tape into engagement with the cut ends whereby the two webs are spliced together (Figs. 2 to 5, not shown). The leading end of the new web 3 is introduced between a guide plate 15 and the roller 8 by air blown through air holes (13), (14) in the roller 7 (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown), whilst the cut pieces from the webs 2 and 3 are held by suction on the respective rollers 7 and 8. Alternatively, the cut pieces and the splicing tape may be held on to the respective roller surfaces by double sided adhesive tape. The guide plate 15 may be provided with a hole through which air can be blown to guide the end of the web 3 into the splicing position or the guide plate may be replaced by a further roller.
