Abstract

1347903 Joining webs FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [17 Feb 1970] 22000/71 Heading B8R Apparatus for butt-splicing a new web 3 to a running web 2 comprises a cutting station including co-operating drums 8 and 9, a splicing station including co-operating drums 12 and 13, and web-guide plates 10, 11 located between the two stations. The drum 8 is provided with a cutting blade 14 and with perforations 19, the drum 19 is formed with two compartments 21, 25 communicating respectively with perforations 24 and 26, and the drum 13 is formed with perforations 30 to which suction is applied to hold a splicing tape 29. In operation, the leading end of the new web 3 is held by suction against the perforations 26 of drum 9; when the trailing end of the web 2 is sensed by a detector (not shown), the drums 8, 9, 12, 13 are rotated in synchronism in the directions indicated by the arrows B, C, D, E whereby in sequence, the web 3 is overlaid with web 2, the superposed webs are cut by the blade 14, the cut ends 2<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>1</SP> of the webs are held by suction against the perforations 19 and 26 respectively, the new leading end of the web 3 is blown down, by an air blast from perforation 24 to abut the trailing end of the web 2, the abutting webs are transported by the drums through the guides 10, 11, and the splicing tape 29 is applied to the join by the drum 13. The drums 8, 9, 12, 13 are formed with flat surfaces as shown to provide clearance during normal operation, and the drums 8 and 12 are resiliently mounted.
