Abstract

A valve with a cylindrical plug 4 and a contractable liner 5 is provided with a sealing ring 13 whose thickness is greater than that of the liner 5, the body 3 being provided with means (17) (Fig. 3, not shown) to press against the external surface of the liner 5 to urge the plug 4 towards the sealing ring 13. The invention may be embodied in a pipe coupling and valve of the type described in Specification 638,959. The sealing ring is held in position between the valve bore 7 and the plug bore 8 by a metal ring 14, and is trapped in the gap between the ring 14 and the liner 5 at two diametrically opposed points on the minor axis of the aperture 12.
