Abstract

1,230,619. Invalid carriages. A. C. R. ARMSTRONG JONES. EARL OF SNOWDON. 21 Aug., 1968 [26 July, 1968; 8 Aug., 1968], Nos. 35763/68 and 37946/68. Heading B7H. A carriage for use by an invalid comprises a low level platform 11 capable of supporting any suitable chair to be occupied by the invalid and having two rear wheels in housings 12 and a driven steerable front wheel in a housing 15. The front wheel is steered by a detachable column 27 having an adjustable head 36 and an adjustable hand lever 37 containing a trigger 41 controlling an electric motor driving the front wheel. The column 27 is a push fit on a steerable housing 16, 17 mounting the front wheel in the housing 15 and has an electrical contact making surface 33 at its lower end which engages a contact 34 attached to the motor to connect or disconnect the supply from a battery in a housing 43 on the platform when the column is replaced or withdrawn, Fig. 3. The motor drives the wheel through a reduction gearing in a gear-box which may incorporate a simple worm or spur wheel reduction gearing or it may incorporate change-speed gearing or some other form of variable drive.
