A dry mix of fine aggregate, e.g. sand, and an hydraulic binder, e.g. lime, gypsum or cement, has a stable shape transportable unitwise which after being laid on to a wallwork course is set by adding water. A water-soluble plastic binder, e.g. polyglycol or Me cellulose can be added to the dry mix, which can then be formed into strip form and laid on the course. Addition of water dissolves the plastic and sets the mortar. The dry mix can also be filled into containers consisting at least partially of water-soluble material, and having holes in the top side to allow water to enter. The container can also be made of insoluble material in which case the top side is removable. Fibres e.g. glass, sisal or asbestos, and also a textile band, e.g. gauze, can be inserted before the strip is formed.
