Abstract

Hydraulic mortar compsns., esp. suitable for coating walls, setting and joining tiles or flagstones, and as a moulding material contain a hydraulic binder, possibly a filler and addns. The compsns. also contain by wt., 0.05-3% synthetic polymer fibrils and 0.05-0.5% wetting agent for the polymer, the bal. being the binder, filler and addns. in the conventional proportions used for mortars. The pref. mortar contains 0.2-1% fibrils, esp. polyethylene, and the fibrils may contain filler. The wetting agent is pref. a cellulose ether, esp. methyl-cellulose. The binder is pref. white cement or plaster the filler being white sand. The binder, filler and addns. are mixed with water to form a paste then the fibrils added as a % of the dry mixt. The paste is then pref. used as a wall facing or to fix tiles on a wall. The pref. fibrils are 0.5-50, esp. 0.5-15 mm long x max. 5 mm, pref. 0.5 mm dia., and with specific surface above 1 m2/g.
