Abstract
1,228,959. Mechanically closing bags. VERENIGDE KUNSTMESTFABRIEKEN MEKOG - ALBATROS N.V. 23 April, 1968 [25 April, 1967], No. 19118/68. Heading B8C. Apparatus for closing the open end of a filled bag has two pairs of movably mounted elements, each pair being adapted to grip the bag mouth near one of the edges and means to exert a force on the pairs after gripping to force them apart and stretch the upper edge of the bag. Pistons rotate arms 1, 1<SP>1</SP> bringing the elements 4, 4<SP>1</SP> into contact with the bag below its top edge, further pressure causes the pairs to slide outwards, towards the side edges. This causes rollers 7 coupled to the elements by rods 9 to move downwards and expel the air in the bag. The arms 1, 1<SP>1</SP> move away from the bag, the pairs being locked in their extreme outward position by a ratchet bar 10 engaging a spring loaded pawl in a guideway 12. The pawl is released by a cable 17, 17<SP>1</SP> when the arms are in the open position. The elements 4, 4<SP>1</SP> can be biased towards their inner position or a shaft with ends 16, 16<SP>1</SP> can be torsioned to rotate the arms 8, 8<SP>1</SP> and the roller 7 upward (Fig. 1) thereby returning the elements to rest. The whole apparatus can be mounted on a carriage to move with the bags when these pass continuously through the machine. The length of the clamping elements 4, 4<SP>1</SP>, in a direction parallel to the open bag seam can be varied in order to deal with bags of different sizes.
