Abstract

1,227,575. Forming flat bottom packages. MIRA-PAK Inc. 15 July, 1968 [19 Dec., 1967], No. 33553/68. Heading B8C. A continuous web 11 of packaging film is formed into a tube 18, transversely sealed at spaced intervals and then severed to form packages, by means of a former 16 and longitudinal sealing means 17 which are reciprocated vertically and by means of sealing and severing jaws 22a and 22b which are reciprocated horizontally, as described in Specification 918,469, but each package is formed with a flat bottom so that it will stand. As the former 16 is moved upwardly (while the jaws 22a and 22b clamp the cut lower end of package B) to form a further length of tubular material (for package C), the lower end of the package B flattens itself against the open end 20 of a stationary mandrel 19 within the tube 18. A platen 30 is then pressed against the lower end of the package B by a piston-and-cylinder 34. Product is introduced through a funnel 21 and the tube 18 into the package B. After sealing of the top end of the package B, it is stripped away as described in Specification 943,574. If " pillow " type packages are formed, the two ears of the bottom end may be secured against the sides, or the bottom, of the package. A " gussetted " type package is formed by means of V-shaped gussetting bars 35 which co-operate with V-shaped grooves in the mandrel 19. The mandrel may be circular in cross-section. The longitudinal seal may be at one side instead of at back or front of the package.
