Abstract
1409846 Producing filled and sealed bags R J WEIKERT 18 June 1973 [23 June 1972] 28896/73 Headings B8C and B8K A method of filling and sealing bags comprises feeding on to a filling pipe 30 a continuous tube 10 having transverse seal lines 16 extending from the bottom 14 of the tube to a point spaced from the upper edge, the pipe being positioned between the top of the seal lines and the upper edge of the tube, filling through opening 34 in the tube the compartments 18 between the seal lines, sealing the top of the compartments as by means of a band sealer 58, and severing the tube between the band seal line and the upper edge of the tube to separate the tube from the pipe. Each seal line 16 comprises a pair of closely spaced lines joined at the top and separated by a serrated line so that the filled bags 64 automatically separate after a knife 62 has cut the top of the tube off. As the tube passes over the pipe 30 it rests on a conveyer 40 between two side conveyers (44) which control the volume of the bags. A scale weighing the filled separated bags adjusts the distance apart of the side conveyers (44). The conveyers and pipe 30 are inclined upwardly so that excess material in one compartment falls into the next one. The pipe 30 may comprise a plurality of pipes discharging either of the same point or at spaced points. One pipe may discharge a sterilizing gas, or an inert gas when packaging compounds which react with the atmosphere. The tube 10 may be formed by extrusion, or from a single web, or a pair of webs, and may be fed directly into the machine or be wound on a roll 26 first.
