Abstract

1,223,844. Rotary pumps. ROLLS ROYCE Ltd. and GENERAL MOTORS CORP. June 10, 1968 [June 9, 1967], No.26842/67. Heading F1F. In an internally-meshing gear pump comprising a housing 12, Figs.1, 2 within which is mounted an externally-lobed driving gear element 11 and an internally-lobed driven ring gear element 13 having one more lobe, all but two adjacent external lobes 20 and two adjacent internal lobes 14 are cut away to be of less axial extent than the full axial length of the gear elements so that during pump operation pumping occurs only in the spaces sealed by the intermesh of the full length lobes. Thus in the embodiment shown, with six external lobes, and seven internal lobes with six pumping spaces, pumping will occur in one pumping space every seven cycles so that pump output is only 1/42 of what it would have been if the lobes had not been cut away. The pump includes a single kidneyshaped inlet port 26 and two output ports 29, 30 fitted with non-return valves 34, 35 and between the ports 29, 30 in the direction of rotation of the gear elements, a by-pass port 32 connected by a passage 33 with the inlet port 26. Thus small accurately metered quantities can be passed through a pump having practical dimensions.
