[Also in Division B8] A rotary wire stitching machine comprises at least one stitching head 12 carried by a cylindrical drum 10 or mounted on an arm rotatable about an axis, the head including a forming member 13 part of which 22 is positionable radially outwardly of a stitch-forming wire blank carried by the head so as to trap part of the blank against radially outward movement during shaping of the blank to U-shape by ears 18 (Fig. 3) moving outwardly and substantially radially of the drum relative to the forming member and an anvil 21. The wire blank is formed by feeding wire from a nozzle (36) (Fig. 1, not shown) transversely of a channel 29 and by motion of a pusher arm 28<SP>1</SP> past the nozzle to cut the wire. Pusher arms 28, 28<SP>1</SP> on a delivery cylinder 27 advance the blank to a position in which a head removes the blank from the channel by engagement of steps 43 on the ears, with the blank which is positioned between but not contacted by the part 22 of the forming member and the anvil. The forming member 13 and the anvil are then moved so as to trap the blank during shaping of the staple by movement of the ears 18. After the staple has been shaped the head moves past overbending blocks 26, which force the legs of the staple inwardly, to a carrier roll 23 which carries the signature of a book. The ears are retracted and the forming member is removed as the staple enters the signature at a stitching station. The staple is then forced against a clinching block 25 by the anvil to form a stitch. The anvil and ears have slots 41, 42 therein to locate the staple. The carrier roll may be used as a collecting cylinder on which more than one batch of sheets is collected at a collecting station before stitching occurs. The delivery cylinder may have two pusher stations (Fig. 7, not shown) and the drum 10 and the collecting cylinder may have three stitching heads and stitching stations respectively. For collecting two batches to form one signature one of the two pusher stations is rendered inoperative. The delivery cylinder may be replaced by a feed belt or conveyer.
