Abstract

710,500. Wrapping machines. ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd. Feb. 21, 1952 [March 9, 1951], No. 5688/51. Class 94 (1) A bunch - wrapping machine has iris diaphragm means for completing the bunch wrapping after an article and wrapper have been pushed through preliminary folding dies into the pocket of a rotary carrier. An article 11 to be wrapped is fed by a conveyer 12 of the type described in Specification 710,504, [Group XXX], to a reciprocating pusher 16 positioned beneath folding dies 17, 18 arranged below the path of movement of an intermittently rotated carrier 19 having pockets 21 arranged to register with the dies. The lower die 18 has radial rods 37 arranged on its upper surface and the upper die 17 has radial flutes 36 on its lower surface. An octagonal wrapper 29 cut from a web 31 'with triangular portions 33 punched from the edges, is drawn by grippers 28 between the dies, the upper die 17 then being lowered to cause the wrapper to be engaged between the flutes 36 and rods 37 to form initial pleats therein. At the same time the pusher 16 lifts the :article 11 up through the dies and, in co-operation with a spring-loaded transfer member 38 engaging the top of the article and wrapper, pushes the article and wrapper into a pocket 21 of the carrier where it is held by a brush lining 41 with the pleated part of the wrapper extending downwardly. This part of the wrapper is folded onto the article as soon as the pusher 16 retires by an iris diaphragm carried in the base of the pocket. The iris diaphragm comprises leaves 42 each pivoted at one end to the pocket and having at its other end a pin 46 passing into a guiding slot 47, in an operating ring 48 rotatably mounted in the base of the pocket. 'Teeth 49 on the exterior of the ring 48 engage a rack 51 slidably mounted in the side of the pocket, a roller 52 on the rack engaging closing and opening members 54, 53. After folding, the carrier moves to an idle station, then to a labelling station where a device as described in Specification 710,499, [Group XV], applies a label to secure the folds. The carrier is then moved to a discharge station where a pusher 57 lifts the wrapped article into camqperated jaws 63 of an intermittently rotated delivery member 59 which deposits'it on a discharge conveyer 65.
