Abstract

[Also in Divisions A4 and B8] A bag of flexible sheet material has one or more carrying handles 1 attached to opposite sides 2, 2<SP>1</SP> of the bag and disposed symmetrically with respect to a plane which is perpendicular to the opposite sides and passes through the mid-points of the longer edges of these sides. The bag may have one handle (Fig. 2) extending generally in the plane with each end attached to one of the wider sides of the bag and an intermediate part forming a grip portion bridging one of the narrower sides of the bag, or two U-shaped handles (Fig. 4, not shown), each being attached by its ends to one of the wider sides of the bag in such a way that a grip portion of the handle formed by the base of the U extends parallel to the longer edges of the wider sides of the bag. Each handle may comprise a strip of paper folded longitudinally several times and reinforced with a thread or fabric insert or be of plastics of high tensile strength. The handles are attached to the bag by adhesive or, if the handles and bag are made from thermoplastics material, by welding. The wider sides of the bag may be reinforced in the region of the handle ends by paper or plastics sheets 4 bonded on the inside and outside of the bag. If the bags are made of multiply material, the individual plies may be connected by spot cementing or spot welding 5 in the region of the handle ends. The length of the grip portion of a handle is such that it does not project beyond the longitudinal edge of the bag when the latter is folded flat (Figs. 1 and 3, not shown).
