Abstract

1,265,940. Shielded cells. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 19 Jan., 1971 [28 Jan., 1970], No. 2595/71. Heading B4Q. An enclosure 1 for handling radioactive material comprises a cylindrical side wall 2 connected by stepped joints 7 to a base 3 and cover 4, the three components 2, 3, 4 each consisting of shielding material, e.g. lead, concrete, depleted uranium, paraffin or polythene, lined with steel sheet. The material to be handled by a manipulator 13 is placed on a turntable 30 rotatable by a motor reduction gear unit 24 controlled by a pedal 25. Observation is permitted by a lamp 9 and window 8. In another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) relating to a larger enclosure a master-slave manipulator is mounted in the side wall 2 together with a window.
