[Also in Divisions B8, F2 and G3] To guide an endless metal band 2 in a controlled path, a controlled temperature differential is maintained between the opposite edges of the band. This may be used to neutralize a tendency for the band to steer in one lateral direction, or to cause the band to steer or curve in a particular lateral direction. In Fig. 1 the band 2 is a moving electrical contact or a continuous slip sheet for a workpiece 10 in a continuous laminating press. The band is supported on rollers 8 journalled in plates 6. To sense a tendency for the band to track laterally, a rod 20 carries position washers 22 adjacent the band edges, the rod 20 actuating a microswitch 16 controlling a solenoid valve 14 for a pilotoperated gas burner 12. Either two such burners and control systems act one on each edge of the band, or the single burner is movable selectively to one or other edge. Thus any tendency to move laterally is automatically neutralized. In Fig. 5, a water spray tunnel 26 is included to keep the band temperature from exceeding an allowable maximum. Alternative methods of heating are a hot contact shoe, an electrically or gas heated plate, or a radiant heater. Heating may be at one or more zones, or round the entire band. A cooling device may be used instead of a heater, or one edge may be heated and the other cooled. The band may be a conveyer, or a band saw, in the latter case the control of temperature gradient being used to steer the band against a workpiece.
