Abstract

1,221,203. Cartridges. USM CORP. 6 June, 1968, No. 26904/68. Heading F3A. A cartridge comprises a projectile body 10 having an axially disposed cavity 14 at its rear end, and, covering the bottom of the cavity and lining the wall thereof, a solid, impact-ignitable low explosive propellant charge 16 comprising a compacted mass of nitrocellulose with air entrapped between the fibres, which thereby define substantially continuous interstitial burning surfaces, the nitrocellulose mass having a density less than 1.6 g./c.c. A centrally raised portion 18 of the propellant charge facilitates ignition. A sealing ring 30 or lugs (not shown) which are deformed and sheared off during firing, provide initial resistance to movement along the barrel 26 of a weapon.
